Brianna and Keith were always up for an adventure with their dogs, Dagwood, and Bucket. They had the best time traveling and living in their van until one day; Dagwood got run over by a car.
The tragedy
The couple was nowhere near a vet clinic when the accident happened. They hit the pedal on the van for three hundred miles to an emergency vet.
By the time they got there, it had been six hours since Dagwood had been hit. In those six hours, all Brianna could do was cry and hope that Dagwood would be all right.
The doctor said that Dagwood has a less than 10 percent chance of surviving. The couple had high hopes for their dog. They knew that Dagwood was a resilient canine.
Brianna and Keith stayed with Dagwood at all times. They slept on the ground next to him and never left his side.
The doctor was sure that Dagwood was paralyzed and had a small chance to regain leg function. The couple was ready to change their lives to help their beloved pet.
Dagwood’s recovery
Dagwood’s story was posted online, and he instantly became viral. A lot of people were praying for the dog’s recovery, as well as sending the couple treats and packages to make them feel better.
Bucket visited Dagwood in the clinic to try and cheer him up. Brianna even showed Dagwood the van that he loved to remind him to keep fighting.
Brianna and Keith thought they would take Dagwood for a ride in the van to remind the dog that his incapability to walk would only be temporary. For the first time in a while, Dagwood’s tail was up, and his eyes didn’t look sad.
The couple never lost hope for their dog. Despite what the doctor said about Dagwood’s paralyzation, they helped their dog heal. Every day, little by little, Brianna and Keith would bring Dagwood out to walk. After a few weeks, Dagwood started to walk on his own.
Discharge day
Brianna and Keith thanked the doctors, nurses, and vet techs who never gave up on Dagwood. They all believed that the dog was a fighter.
A month later, on Dagwood’s seventh birthday, they all went back to the desert. The second the tires hit the dirt road, the dogs ran to the front of the van and excitedly jumped out. Dagwood was ready to play and act like a dog for the first time in so long.
Going back to the desert was a big part of the healing process for everyone. Brianna and Keith were happy because, for a moment, they thought they were going to bring Dagwood’s ashes back to the desert and not the dog himself.
